The Indian Cricket team is all set to begin its new journey as the T20 World Cup Champions. They will play their first series against Zimbabwe, marking this new era. However, this series will also be the first for the Indian team post-Rohit-Kohli-Jadeja era.
Exactly a week after this win, and with Shubhman Gill leading the charge, it has been confirmed that the young opener will partner up with Abhishek Sharma, the IPL sensation, in the first game against Zimbabwe.
They will take the first crack to fill the void Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli left. The two veterans opened throughout the World Cup tournament, which saw India emerge victorious. After seeing their nation through to its second T20 World Cup trophy, which was unbeaten throughout the tournament, they decided to hang up their boots. Later, Ravindra Jadeja, the star all-rounder, joined them in making this decision.

Talking ahead of the game, Gill said, “Abhishek will open with me, and Ruturaj Gaikwad will bat at No.3.” This means that the Indian team will play with three openers in the first game; however, Gaikwad will be sacrificing his position. With his class and ability to manoeuvre the game, he will be expected to make the role his own.
Abhishek Sharma will be expected to continue his explosive form in IPL 2024. The player was phenomenal up front for his side, Sunrisers Hyderabad. By scoring 484 runs in just 16 games, he caught the selector’s eye and earned his first call-up.
He is not alone in the list of players that were called up on the basis of their IPL performance. There will be likes of Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel from Rajasthan Royals. Parag batted with a golden touch in the tournament with 573 runs from just 15 games.
This young squad will be joined by some senior players who were part of the World Cup squad. Yashashvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, and Shivam Dube will be seen in action later in the series. Due to their delayed flight and victory celebration, they will join the squad for just three games.
However, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill, as this series marks his captaincy debut. He hopes to start this new era of his career with a dominating win against Zimbabwe to prove his mettle.
