After a long wait, the announcement is finally here. Gautam Gambhir, the former opener and captain of the Indian Cricket team, is all set to begin his journey as the new head coach.
As this new era begins, the BCCI has announced the first set of fixtures. Gambhir will be the head coach, and the upcoming series against Sri Lanka will be his first outing.
India is all set to visit Sri Lanka, which will be a multi-format tour starting in July. This series will feature 3 ODIs and 3 T20Is. This series is a good opportunity for Gautam Gambhir to acclimate to the dressing room environment, settle into the new job, and start preparing for the Champions Trophy next year.

The tour starts on July 26th, and all the T20Is will be played in Pics Pallekele. Following this, the three ODI series will be played at the RPICS Colombo and will start on August 1st, 2024.
However, some major players are likely to be absent from this series. According to a report published by Republic World, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will be absent.
These veterans have just announced their retirement from the T20Is. Hence, they are rested from the ODIs against Sri Lanka. But they will return to the team for the New Zealand and South Africa series later this year. Furthermore, they will play big roles in Australia’s Border Gavaskar Trophy.
Gambhir will be more than happy to work with the young brigade. They are already showing great potential playing in Zimbabwe under the coaching of VVS Laxman. Once they return and gear up for the Sri Lanka tour, it will be interesting to see who gets the nod ahead of others for Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as head coach.
