Despite the visible animosity between Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir, their feisty relationship didn’t deter BCCI from unexpectedly appointing Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian Cricket Team.

According to a report by Hindustan Times, the former Indian captain was not consulted regarding Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as head coach.

The Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik, was pivotal in recommending Gambhir for the head coach position, choosing him over the former batter WV Raman.

With Gambhir’s appointment as the coach of the Indian Cricket team, the debate about his relationship with Virat Kohli has reignited, keeping the internet abuzz with discussions.

The newly appointed coach announced his retirement from all formats in 2019. However, his last test match, which came in 2016, was under the captaincy of Virat Kohli.

BCCI hope for Virat Kohli and Gambhir’s relationship to improve

Everyone knows that his relationship with Kohli, on the field, is not very good. The duo have had several feuds on the pitch. The most talked about encounters between the two occurred after a game between RCB and Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2023. They came across one another almost as if ready to share blows.

Since then, there have been several reports of the players treating one another with animosity in the 2024 IPL as well. However, when the two arrived on the field, everything seemed to be a thing of the past. They embraced and shared a light moment that dissolved every report of a shattered relationship between them.

Although Virat Kohli has retired from T20Is, he is still an important member of the ODI and Test Squad. The top brass of BCCI believes that the two can talk everything out like the grownups they are.

A BCCI official in conversation with Hindustan Times said, “There is enough time for the two to have conversations over the table. But it was important for BCCI to look at the big picture, with many youngsters likely to be featured in the upcoming years.”
