Interestingly, both Gambhir and Morkel have worked together at Lucknow Super Giants for two seasons. Their duo took the team to consecutive playoffs in the IPL. Hence, it can be said that they share a good bond from their time together.
The 39-year-old South African was a phenomenal bowler in his time. However, it has been a while since he retired from international cricket. With majestic figures against his name and 554 wickets, he is certainly a great choice for a bowling coach.
Gambhir has also suggested that Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate—both members of the KKR coaching staff—join him at Team India.
Earlier this year, Gautam Gambir took charge of KKR as the mentor, marking a successful reunion with his former team, with which he had won 2 IPL titles. In his very first season, he played a pivotal role in helping them win their third title, showcasing his exceptional coaching abilities.
His tactics and strategic changes with KKR were so on point that the BCCI was impressed by his performance. Once Rahul Dravid’s departure from the role of head coach was announced, Gambhir became the instant choice.
Now, the move has been finalized. The former cricketer is all set to assume the position of head coach of the Indian cricket team. he will be seen in action with the post-Rohit-Kohli era Indian team in T20Is against Sri Lanka, where India will play 3 T20Is and ODIs.
As Gambhir assumes the position of head coach of the Indian cricket team, there is a palpable sense of anticipation. His innovative coaching strategies and the dynamics of the new team and coaching staff will certainly make for an exciting season.
