After his sensational runs and record-breaking performance in the World Cup 2023, Indian cricketing legend Virat Kohli has won the prestigious ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award.
In an outstanding display of skill, he was able to achieve a half-century in 9 out of 11 World Cup innings and set a new record with a total of 765 runs, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s previous record from the year 2003.
Finishing the tournament, Kohli showcased an impressive average of 95.62 and a strike rate of 90.31, securing three centuries, one of which came in the crucial semi-final against New Zealand.
His remarkable runs significantly contributed to India’s presence in the World Cup finals. But despite securing another half-century, he failed to grab victory for India. The hushed silence followed by Kohli’s exit in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi stadium was a clear testament to his crucial role in India’s quest for the title.
After being interviewed during the innings break he opened up and said, “It’s the stuff of dreams, where Anushka was sitting right there and Sachin Paaji was there in the stands”.
Earlier he had received awards in 2012, 2017, and 2018. This is the fourth time that he has earned the honor overtaking AB de Villiers’ tally of three awards.
Throughout the year 2023, Kohli has mustered 1377 runs at an average of 72.47 recording six centuries and eight half-centuries in 24 innings.
