Off spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has made a swift return to the Indian team during the ongoing third Test against England in Rajkot after taking a brief hiatus due to a family emergency. Ashwin, who left the city after the second day’s play, rejoined the squad on the fourth day, making a comeback during the third session with England at 18 for 2 in their chase of 557.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a statement announcing Ashwin’s return, expressing that both Ashwin and the team management were pleased to confirm his availability for the ongoing Test match. Despite spending an entire day off the field, Ashwin was immediately available to bowl upon his return. The umpires waived the penalty time requirement, given that he was off the field for “other wholly acceptable reasons.”
Ashwin had achieved a significant milestone by taking his 500th wicket in Test cricket on the second day of the Rajkot Test. He had attended the post-play press conference, and the news of his departure from the team was publicly disclosed at 11 pm IST.
Ravi Shastri Confirms BCCI Arrange Special Charter to get Ashwin back in the Rajkot Test
Former India coach Ravi Shastri revealed that BCCI secretary Jay Shah had arranged a charter flight for Ashwin’s trip home and back. Ashwin was seen back in action at the Tea break, participating in the remainder of the third Test against England. The off spinner, donning his signature floppy hat, engaged in bowling on the practice pitches, accompanied by head coach Rahul Dravid and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey.
“BCCI secretary Jay Shah had arranged charter plane for Ashwin’s trip home and back,” Shastri said while doing the commentary.
The BCCI statement emphasized privacy for Ashwin and his family as they navigate through challenging times. The swift return of Ashwin to the playing XI adds a crucial dimension to India’s bowling lineup as they aim to secure victory in the ongoing Test against England.
