In the India-Australia test series, Dravid and Laxman batted for the entire fourth day taking away the dominating foothold of a continuous 16-test match win by Australia.
Legends don’t need a day to be remembered! What we can do is keep on cherishing the moments turning back the pages of history.
It was on this day on March 14, 2001, when the stupendous partnership of two legendary cricketers- VVS Laxman and Rahul Dravid made a sensational comeback and stole the spotlight in the India-Australia series at Kolkata’s Eden Garden. Said to be one of the greatest matches played between the two countries, it has majestically changed how cricket is perceived.
Australia won the first test and set the mark of 445 runs in the first inning for Sourav Ganguly-led team India. Laxman and Dravid then came into the picture making the greatest comebacks in Test cricket history. With their performance, India stood at 254/4 on day three. Resuming with the same energy, on day four, they together chased 335 runs knocking Australia out of the game. Laxman concluded his innings at 275 runs, while Dravid remained unbeaten by 155 runs.
On day 5, Dravid was struck out at 181 runs, and Laxman was dismissed after a heroic 281 runs. With 75 overs in hand, Australia had to chase the target of 384 runs in the final day. But Harbhajan Singh saw off the middle order and claimed a second 5-wicket haul. Thus India etched a marvelous victory over Australia breaking its streak of 16 tests win by 171 runs.
