Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) shattered their 16-year-long trophy drought by clinching the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) title in a sensational showdown against Delhi Capitals (DC). At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on March 17, RCB secured an emphatic eight-wicket victory over DC, marking their first-ever WPL trophy win.
RCB’s triumph was orchestrated by a remarkable display of spin bowling in the first innings. Sophie Molinuex and Shreyanka Patil wreaked havoc on DC’s batting lineup, with Molinuex’s stunning three-wicket over turning the tide in RCB’s favour. Their combined effort restricted DC to a meagre total of 113 runs.
In the chase, RCB’s top-order batters, led by Smriti Mandhana, Sophie Devine, and Ellyse Perry, showcased resilience and composure to chase down the target comfortably. Perry’s stellar performance throughout the tournament earned her the Orange Cap, while Shreyanka claimed the Purple Cap with her exceptional bowling performance.
DC, led by Meg Lanning, had a promising start with a fiery opening partnership between Lanning and Shafali Verma. Shafali’s aggressive batting set the tone, but her innings were cut short by Molinuex’s breakthrough.
Despite Shafali’s explosive 44-run knock, DC faltered under RCB’s spin onslaught, failing to capitalize on their strong start. RCB’s clinical performance in both batting and bowling departments ensured their victory and ended their long-standing quest for a WPL title.
The final was a testament to RCB’s resilience and determination, highlighting their evolution as a formidable force in women’s cricket. With this historic win, RCB reaffirmed their status as a powerhouse in the WPL and signalled a new era of success for the franchise.
