Coming out of retirement to represent your nation has become a trend in recent years. The most recent player to join this list is Wanindu Hasaranga of Sri Lanka. The leg spinner joined the test team for the 2-match series against Bangladesh.
Hasaranga announced his retirement from Test Cricket in August 2023. The move was understood to be motivated by his desire to prolong his career in the whiteball format of the game.
Hasaranga returns to test-match setup for Sri Lanka
This move was met with a promotion in the shortest format of the game. Hasaranga was named captain of the Sri Lankan side ahead of the T20 World Cup, due later this year.
However, some unforeseen circumstances have forced him back into the test arena. He will be featured in the series that starts on March 22. This move has hampered several plans in the long run.
One immediate impact of his decision to play test cricket is the delay in his participation in the Indian Premier League.
Hasaranga, who was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 1.5 Cr, will now miss the start of the season for his franchise. He will be out of action for at least the first three games, which will be played on March 23rd, 27th, and 31st, 2024.
However, Hasaranga’s inclusion is one of the two changes the visitors have made going into the test series. While he makes his way into the team along with Nishan Peiris, an off-spinner, players like Asitha Fernando and Milan Priyanth Rathnayake lost their spots.
The first test of the series will be played in Sylhet on March 22. The second test will be played at Chattogram on March 30.
