Chennai Super Kings started their title defense in style, defeating RCB in the opening encounter of the IPL 2024 at home. With a new captain and three debutants, the Super Kings looked unfazed, finishing the game with 6 wickets and 8 balls to spare.
Mustafizur Rahman was the star of the night. He single-handedly changed the course of the first inning in CSK’s favour. He came into bowling when Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli seemed to be running away with everything.

RCB scored 37 runs from their first 4 overs at a rate of 9 runs an over. Captain du Plessis was in red-hot form as he smacked the CSK pacers left and right of the park.
That is when Fizz came on to bowl. In his third ball of the match, he dismissed du Plessis for 35 runs off 23 balls. The RCB skipper scored 8 boundaries in his short innings. This was soon followed by the dismissal of Rajat Patidar, whose poor form continued. He was dismissed for a 3-ball duck in the same over.
Rahman turned his good start into something great with another brace in his second over. This time, he dismissed the big fish, Virat Kohli. The Indian stalwart had struggled to get going at the start of the inning. Hence, looking to score some quick runs, Kohli hoofed one into the gap in deep square leg. However, Ajikya Rahane, with Ravindra in tow, completed a magnificent catch to end Kohli’s struggles.
In the very same over, Fizz also dismissed RCB debutant Cameron Green to pick up his fourth wicket in his 10th ball of the match. Sadly, he couldn’t take a debut fifer, but his spell of 4 for 29 helped CSK restrict RCB to 173.
Looking unfazed in the second inning, Chennai Super Kings chased down the total with 8 balls to spare. The credit for this great chase goes to another debutant, Rachin Ravindra. He started the game in the most blistering fashion and scored 37 runs at a strike rate of 246 to give his team the perfect start.
Later, Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube led the team to victory and registered Chennai Super Kings’ first win in IPL 2024.
