Recent incidents involving IPL commentators posting pictures or videos from the stadium during match days have prompted the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to enforce stricter guidelines. A former India batsman, who posted a picture of himself commentating during an IPL game, was asked by a BCCI staff member to delete it to adhere to the regulations.

BCCI Cracking Down on Violations

The BCCI, in collaboration with official broadcasters Star India and Viacom 18, aims to prevent individuals or teams from gaining undue social media traction by posting unauthorised content during IPL matches. Violations, such as posting images or videos on match days, have consequences, with offenders facing fines or other penalties.

Star India and Viacom 18 hold exclusive rights to IPL content, including ‘live matches’ and the ‘field of play.’ IPL teams and commentators are prohibited from capturing and posting live game footage directly on their social media platforms. While limited images are permitted, reposting content from official IPL or BCCI handles is allowed.

BCCI Enforcement Measures

To ensure compliance, designated BCCI staff members monitor social media activity during IPL matches. Players, commentators, and IPL teams are reminded of the rules and instructed to delete unauthorised posts. Recent instances of players disregarding the regulations have led to warnings and subsequent deletions of offending posts.
