Australian cricketer Glenn Maxwell has signed up to play for the Washington Freedom in the upcoming Major League Cricket (MLC) season, adding star power to the team alongside compatriots Steve Smith and Travis Head.
A Shift from IPL to MLC
Maxwell’s move to the Washington Freedom comes amidst his recent absence from the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) squad in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. The all-rounder clarified that his decision to skip IPL matches was due to a period of poor form rather than the need for an extended break.
Expressing his enthusiasm for joining the MLC, Maxwell revealed in an interview with ESPN’s Around the Wicket that he had been eager to participate in the tournament after closely following it last year. He expressed excitement about playing alongside Steve Smith and Travis Head under the guidance of coach Ricky Ponting.
Maxwell’s form in IPL 2024 has been below par, with 32 runs scored in six innings for RCB. Maxwell acknowledged his lack of confidence during the tournament and felt tentative and unable to commit to his game plans on the field.
Rather than persisting with his struggles, Maxwell took the initiative to request a break from the RCB lineup, citing the need to explore other options for the team’s benefit. He approached captain Faf du Plessis and coach Andy Flower to discuss stepping back from the squad.
Maxwell also revealed that he is nursing a hip strain during his break from IPL action. Despite the injury, he remains committed to training and preparing for his return to the field. Maxwell expressed his readiness to contribute to the team if a spot opens up in the upcoming game against Kolkata Knight Riders.
As Maxwell transitions to Major League Cricket with the Washington Freedom, he focuses on regaining form and making valuable contributions to his new team. With coach Ricky Ponting’s support and fellow players’ camaraderie, Maxwell aims to excel in the upcoming MLC season.
