The defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, might have had an excellent start to their IPL 2024 campaign. However, they have been dealt a massive blow in the form of an injury. Devon Conway, their star batter of the previous season, has been ruled out for the entire season.

Devon Conway out of IPL 2024

The player suffered a fractured left thumb during a recently concluded T20I match against Australia. He was ruled out of the series and the first half of IPL 2024. There were reports that the player would return by May.

Sadly, that is not going to be the case. It has been all but confirmed that New Zealand’s Devon Conway is not returning to CSK’s aid. The team has also named a replacement in England’s Richard Gleeson.

Richard Gleeson joins CSK as replacement of Devon Conway

CSK must have considered long and hard before roping in Richard Gleeson. The English player is a pace bowler, which completely contrasts Conway’s profile of an opener. Pundits suggest the move was made with the knowledge that Mustafizur will be missing from action for CSK in the coming days.

The Bangladeshi bowler will have to return for some international duties. Hence, Gleeson will perhaps fill in the boots of Fizz, who is currently the joint-highest wicket-taker among fast bowlers.

Gleeson has impressed everyone in his short international career. Having made his debut in 2022, the 34-year-old removed Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and then Rishabh Pant in his first eight balls of an international match.

Although the player has not played in the IPL, he has been active recently, participating in the BBL, BPL, and even SA20. So, he will be coming to the team with a good number of matches under his belt. He will be expected to deliver on the promise built around him.

For now, Gleeson has played 90 T20s and picked 101 wickets at an economy of 8.18.
