Matheesha Pathirana, a key Chennai Super Kings player, has carved a niche for himself in the IPL with his unique bowling style. His toe-crushing Yorkers, delivered with pinpoint accuracy, have become his trademark, rarely failing to hit their mark.
His bowling was one of the biggest reasons behind CSK’s success in the 2023 edition. And even in 2024, whenever he has the ball in hand, the team in yellow believes that anything is possible. However, the Sri Lankan player credits someone else for his personal success.
Pathirana sees MS Dhoni as a Father Figure on field
In a recent interview featured on Chennai Super King’s YouTube channel, Pathirana opened up about the profound influence of MS Dhoni on his career, highlighting the crucial role of mentorship in his success.
Talking about the sport MS Dhoni provides him, Pathirana said, “After my father, in my cricket life, he (Dhoni) plays my father’s role. He takes care of me, and he gives me advice on what I have to do, similar to my father’s thing when I’m at home. I think that’s enough.”
“He doesn’t tell me a lot of things when I’m on the field and off the field, but he tells me just small things that make a lot of difference gives me a lot of confidence,” Pathirana added. He even went on to reveal that MS Dhoni has mastered the art of managing player and the Sri Lankan can approach the former captain anytime he has questions.
This is not the first time that someone has called MS Dhoni an influential person in their lives. He has been renowned for nurturing young talents into something phenomenal.
Several players have undergone remarkable transformations under the tutelage of MS Dhoni, who plays for Chennai Super Kings. Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Suresh Raina have evolved into world-class cricketers, a testament to Dhoni’s exceptional mentorship.
One of the recent cricketers who talked about the transformation they witnessed under MS Dhoni was Shivam Dube. After his recent stint with the Indian team and a great display of power hitting, the player opened up about how MS Dhoni’s advice was helpful for him.
The former skipper might be at the end of his playing career. But the Indian stalwart still has a lot to offer, and it will be interesting to see MS Dhoni in mentoring roles.
