Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) opening batsman, Abhishek Sharma, has captured attention with his remarkable performance in the IPL 2024 and unique “L” celebration. In a recent match against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Abhishek and Heinrich Klaasen’s stellar performances led SRH to a successful chase of 215 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
In a video posted by the Indian Premier League (IPL) official X handle, Abhishek revealed the meaning behind the “L” celebration. “It is personal to us. It stands for love; we are spreading love,” he explained.
The celebration, initiated by Abhishek and his opening partner Travis Head, has become a signature move this season. Abhishek also shared the emotional significance of having his family, except his father, present at the stadium, adding, “It is special to me if they are able to come here and see me, celebrate with me in such moments.”
SRH Star Abhishek Sharma Continues Stellar IPL 2024 Form Ahead of Playoffs
Abhishek Sharma’s impressive performance continued in the match against PBKS. He scored 66 runs off 28 deliveries, featuring 5 fours and 6 sixes. His strike rate was an astounding 235.71. This performance propelled him to a historic achievement: He became the Indian batsman with the most sixes in a single IPL edition, surpassing Virat Kohli’s 2016 record of 38 sixes. Abhishek now has 41 sixes in IPL 2024.
This remarkable feat also saw him surpass his teammate Heinrich Klaasen’s tally of 33 sixes, as well as David Warner’s 31 sixes in 2016 and Travis Head’s 31 sixes in 2024. Abhishek now holds the record for the most sixes by an SRH player in a single season. The all-time record remains with West Indies legend Chris Gayle, who hit 59 sixes for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2012 season.
In IPL 2024, Abhishek scored 467 runs in 13 innings, placing him ninth among the batters with the most runs this season. He boasts an average of 38.91 and a strike rate of 209.41, with three half-centuries and a highest score of an unbeaten 75.
After a remarkable chase against PBKS in their final league stage clash, Pat Cummins-led SRH will face the top-ranked KKR on May 21 in this season’s 1st Qualifier. Meanwhile, RCB, who recently made their way to the playoffs by beating the 5-time title champion CSK, will clash against RR in Eliminator 1 on May 22.
