The Uganda men’s cricket team, set to debut in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, faced an unexpected challenge when the International Cricket Council (ICC) asked for a change in their jersey design. The tournament, scheduled to be held in the West Indies and the United States from June 2, will feature Uganda in a revised jersey after the ICC’s directive.
The original jersey design, which was selected through a public competition, featured a vibrant yellow colour with feathered patterns inspired by Uganda’s national bird, the grey-crowned crane. The design by Elijah Mangeni was chosen as the winner in March, but the ICC raised concerns about the visibility of sponsor logos on the jersey. Consequently, the feathered pattern on the sleeves had to be removed, and similar changes were made to the trousers.
Musali Denis, the Uganda Cricket Association’s public relations officer, explained the situation: “The ICC asked for a change in the design, but we didn’t have enough time to make the required changes and had to compromise on the winning design. We lost just about 20 per cent of the original design, but the rest of the design is the same,” Musali said by cricket.com.au.
Despite the unexpected alterations, the team demonstrated their adaptability and resilience. They unveiled their new jersey just before embarking on their journey to the Caribbean. The revised design, while complying with the ICC’s requirements, still retains a faint outline of the original feathered wings, ensuring that the jersey continues to reflect its initial inspiration.
Uganda’s journey in the T20 World Cup, commencing on June 3 against Afghanistan in Guyana, is a momentous occasion for Ugandan cricket. It marks a significant milestone, providing a platform for the team to showcase their talent on an international stage, and igniting hope for a successful campaign.

The T20 World Cup is not just a tournament; it is a crucial stepping stone towards cricket’s inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. After a hiatus of 128 years, the sport is set to make a comeback, and the T20 World Cup plays a pivotal role in this historic event. With 16 teams competing in the month-long tournament, the matches will be spread across three venues in the United States — New York, Dallas, and Lauderhill — with the majority, including the knockouts, scheduled to take place in the Caribbean.
The third day of the competition will feature a match between South Africa and Sri Lanka in New York, where the first-ever international cricket game was held between the USA and Canada in 1844. Cricket was once widely played across the US before baseball gained prominence during the Civil War in the 1860s.
