The trend of upsets continues in the 2024 T20 World Cup as Canada beats Ireland in a giddy encounter. This comes just a day after the USA handed a shocking defeat to Pakistan, the finalist of the last World Cup.
All eyes were again on the pitch as the match commenced in New York. The Irish bowling was spot on, and Canadian batters were really hard to beat. Canada was down to 53 for 4 in the 9th over of the game.
That is when Nicholas Kirton and Shreyas Movva came together to forge a good partnership that added 75 runs for the 5th wicket. Their efforts guided the team’s total to 137 in their 20 overs. Surprisingly, this was the first time in five innings that a team managed to breach the 100-run mark on the wicket. And somehow, it proved to be enough.
Chasing the total, Ireland started slowly but steadily. But things got ugly really fast once their openers departed for the score of 32. They found themselves spiralling out of order, and 4 wickets fell in a span of 6.1 overs and 27 runs. Canadian bowlers Saad and Siddiqui gave the Irish batters no room to manoeuvre; their line was always on the stumps. This was a major reason behind the frenzy in which Ireland lost their wickets.

George Dockrell and Mark Adair tried to steady the ship and take their team over the line, but couldn’t. Both of them smashed some boundaries towards the latter end of the inning, but it would not be enough. As a result, they found themselves 12 runs short of the target.

With this win, Canada has now beaten Ireland thrice in T20Is. They are the only full-member that Canada has beaten thus far. But the way they’re doing their business, there is a lot of scope for them in the future.
Having won one game and lost one, they will be looking to produce more upsets as they take on Pakistan and India next in the World Cup.
