The Board of Control for Cricket in India is inviting applications for the head coach position of the national teams, and Gautam Gambhir is believed to be among the favourable candidates.
Rahul Dravid, the current head coach, will end his tenure in June after the 2024 T20 World Cup. He has made his intentions clear that he won’t be reapplying for the position, and BCCI has made peace with the decision. This means that a new face will likely take up the job.
Gambhir: BCCI’s first choice for the head coach position?
According to reports by ESPNcricinfo, the board has contacted Gautam Gambhir, who is currently a mentor with KKR in the IPL. They are interested in making him part of the national team.
However, at this moment, there have been no discussions regarding this with the former player. Gambhir is currently busy with KKR and their preparation for the IPL playoffs. Hence, talks regarding the Indian head coach job will only occur after May 26, the IPL final.
Gambhir has no international or domestic coaching experience. However, his record with IPL teams has been very bright, especially in recent years. He was the mentor at Lucknow Super Giants for the 2022 and 23 seasons of the tournament, and they qualified for the playoffs on both occasions.
In 2024, he switched to Kolkata Knight Riders, who became the first team in that year to qualify for the playoffs. Gambhir arrived at his previous IPL franchise with high expectations after it was revealed that the owner, Shah Rukh Khan, persuaded the player to become the team’s mentor.
Dravid had a relatively good tenure with the Indian team. They managed to reach knockouts in every ICC tournament they participated in. But somehow, victory in the penultimate matches eluded them. During his stint, India lost the final of the World Test Championship for the second time in 2023. Australia trounced them in the final. Later in the same year, and by the same team, they were denied another trophy in the 2023 ODI World Cup.
The 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA will be Dravid’s last opportunity to bow out of the role with a trophy to show for his efforts.
