In a candid admission, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming acknowledged that the franchise was not prepared to move on from MS Dhoni when they appointed Ravindra Jadeja as captain for IPL 2022. Speaking ahead of the IPL 2024 season-opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Fleming revealed insights into the leadership transition within the team.
Unprepared Transition
Fleming confessed that CSK was unprepared for the transition away from MS Dhoni’s captaincy in 2022 despite initially naming Jadeja as skipper. The move backfired, leading to Dhoni reclaiming the leadership role mid-season. Reflecting on the decision, Fleming admitted, “We weren’t ready to move away from MS (Dhoni) in 2022.”
Acknowledging the need to groom young players for leadership roles, Fleming emphasised the importance of preparing for life after Dhoni. He highlighted the team’s focus on nurturing emerging talent: “We want to develop the young players for the role. We are well prepared this time.”
Unlike the unexpected nature of Dhoni’s previous captaincy exit, CSK was aware of the impending leadership change this time around. Fleming indicated that the team had anticipated Dhoni stepping down, allowing them to plan accordingly for the transition.
Trust in Youngsters
Fleming expressed confidence in youngsters like Ruturaj Gaikwad’s ability to step up and lead the team. He revealed having discussions with Gaikwad and other young players about leadership and captaincy, emphasising it as a significant opportunity for them to shine.
Optimism About Dhoni’s Form
Commenting on Dhoni’s form and fitness, Fleming revealed positive signs from the former captain during practice matches. He hoped Dhoni would remain available throughout the season, stating, “MS has done well in the practice games, and I hope we will have his services for the rest of the season.”
As CSK braces for a new era under Ruturaj Gaikwad’s leadership, Fleming’s insights illuminate the team’s strategic approach and commitment to nurturing talent while honouring MS Dhoni’s legacy.
