Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made an unexpected comeback during the post-tea session on the fourth day of the third Test against England after an unfortunate absence. Ashwin had left for Chennai to attend to his ailing mother just hours after achieving the milestone of 500 Test wickets on the second day of the match.
According to ICC’s Playing Conditions, Ashwin did not incur any ‘Penalty time’ for his absence on the third day. Clause 24.3.2 of the ICC rules states that a nominated player’s absence will not result in Penalty time if the umpires believe the player left the field for other wholly acceptable reasons, excluding illness or internal injury. Ashwin’s return was met with enthusiasm as he was spotted engaging in drills during the tea break.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced Ashwin’s return during the first session of the fourth day, stating, “The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is pleased to announce the return of Ravichandran Ashwin to the squad after a brief absence due to a family emergency. Ashwin had to temporarily withdraw from the squad after Day 2 of the 3rd Test in Rajkot to attend to a family emergency.”
The statement continued, “Both R Ashwin and the team management are pleased to confirm that he will be back in action on Day 4 and will continue to contribute towards the team’s cause in the ongoing Test match.” The BCCI expressed gratitude for the understanding and empathy shown by stakeholders, including the team management, players, media, and fans, during this challenging period for the star cricketer.
The return of Ashwin was heralded by former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who hinted at the off-spinner’s imminent comeback during his commentary before the start of day four proceedings. The team and supporters united in support of Ashwin during the difficult period, emphasizing the importance of family as a priority. Ashwin and his family have requested privacy as they navigate through these challenging times, and the management was delighted to have him back on the field.
