After a string of disappointing performances, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally ended their six-game losing streak in the IPL 2024 with a decisive 35-run victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 41st match of the tournament. The win was only RCB’s second of the season.
Du Plessis Makes Light of His Return to Press Conference
Following the game, RCB skipper Faf du Plessis remarked light-heartedly about forgetting his way to the post-match press conference after not winning for a long time. The skipper from the losing side does not attend the press conference, and Du Plessis’s joke highlighted how long it had been since he last spoke at one.
“I forgot the way to the press conference. Every time I’ve just walked off (laughs). The last two games, we’ve showed great signs of a fight. The last game they scored 270+ and we got 260; the KKR game also lost by a run. We’ve played some close games, but you have to win matches to regain confidence in the group… When you don’t win, it affects the team and me as well,” Du Plessis said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
After exactly one month, the RCB skipper expressed relief at winning the match. He emphasized the importance of confidence in a team and how it cannot be artificially instilled. According to Du Plessis, confidence can only come from good performances, which the team showcased against SRH.
“I’ll sleep a little happier tonight. You can’t speak confidence into a group; you can’t fake confidence into a group. The only thing that gives confidence is performances. In the first half, we were not quite near our potential. Obviously, you try 100 percent, but if the performances aren’t good, the competition is so strong and the teams are so strong, you’ll get hurt,” Du Plessis said.
The victory was a much-needed boost for RCB, who will be hoping to carry the momentum into their upcoming games.
