Indian Premier League (IPL) Chairman Arun Dhumal has officially announced that a mega auction is on the horizon after the conclusion of the 2024 season. IPL 2024 is poised to commence on March 22, featuring a clash between defending champions Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Chepauk Stadium.
Mega auctions occur periodically in the IPL, every three years, and provide teams with the opportunity to revamp their squads. Last year, a mini-auction took place in Dubai, witnessing Australian pacer Mitchell Starc become the costliest player in IPL history.
Dhumal affirmed the occurrence of a mega auction for the 2025 season, allowing teams to retain 3-4 players before heading into the auction. He expressed, “We will have the mega auction for sure, where you get to choose three-four players and then you have a new team. That makes it more interesting, and that format will continue.”

The IPL Chairman expressed optimism about the mega auction, hoping it will match the scale of previous editions. The last mega auction in 2022 witnessed the sale of 204 players for a total of Rs 551 crore.
“Hopefully, the mega auction will be as big and as good as we have had earlier given newer talents coming in not from India and other countries. Teams like Afghanistan have also benefitted as they could showcase their talent,” Dhumal added.
Addressing the conclusion of IPL 2024, Dhumal revealed that it is scheduled to end on either May 25 or 26. This timeline considers the looming 2024 T20 World Cup, which is set to commence on June 7. The initial fixtures for the first two weeks of IPL 2024 have been disclosed, with the tournament’s conclusion adjusted to facilitate the Indian Premier League’s alignment with the Lok Sabha elections.

“This time the challenge is that we are starting with the T20 World Cup in the first week of June, and we were planning to close the tournament by May 25 or May 26 as the team will have to travel to the US, and that’s a different territory altogether,” said Dhumal.
“For the first time, the tournament will be held there and it’s a new thing, so the players need to be there early to have some sort of practice games ahead of the tournament,” Dhumal concluded.
As the anticipation builds for IPL 2024, teams are gearing up for what promises to be an enthralling season, with Chennai Super Kings aiming to kickstart their campaign with a victory in the opening match.
