Former Australian cricket captain Meg Lanning recently revealed the underlying reasons behind her surprise international retirement in November 2023. The 32-year-old disclosed that her relationship with food and exercise had spiralled out of control, leading to her decision to step away from the sport.

Lanning confessed that she had been over-exercising and under-fuelling, running up to 90 kilometres a week while consuming only two small meals daily. Despite concerns raised by others, she found herself in denial about her situation, which ultimately affected her mental and physical well-being and prevented her from committing to the Ashes series.

As one of cricket’s most successful players and captains, Lanning’s retirement marked the end of a glittering career that saw her lead Australia to numerous victories, including the 50-over World Cup in 2022, four T20 titles, and Commonwealth Games gold in 2022. However, towards the end of her tenure, she admitted feeling out of balance and becoming “a different person.”

Her unhealthy relationship with food and exercise had become an obsession, offering her a sense of control and an escape from reality. While she refrained from labelling it as an eating disorder, Lanning acknowledged the need for help, recognizing that she was in “a good spot” after seeking support.

Lanning’s struggles extended beyond food and exercise, as she also battled insomnia and withdrew from social interactions. However, through seeking help and opening up to friends and family, she began to understand the importance of communication in overcoming challenges.

Despite her international retirement, Lanning continues to play domestic cricket, recently leading Delhi Capitals to the Women’s Premier League final and joining London Spirit for The Hundred. Her journey serves as a reminder of the importance of mental and physical well-being in professional sports and highlights the significance of seeking support when needed.
