In a dramatic start to the T20 World Cup 2024, Australia was jolted by a major setback- the injury of their key player, Mitchell Starc. The pace bowler, known for his lethal deliveries, was visibly battling through pain and had to be substituted in the 15th over of the game, leaving a void in the Australian bowling attack.
The incident occurred after Starc came on to bowl the final over of his quota. However, after bowling just one ball, that too a wide, he was in visible pain. Physios rushed onto the pitch, but the player couldn’t be revived and had to walk off the field.
Glenn Maxwell was then given the responsibility of bowling the over.
Marsh on Starc’s injury
Following this injury, Mitchell Marsh opened up about the injury to Starc. “Starcy was just a cramp so didn’t want to take a chance. When Starcy says I am okay to go off, you let him go off.”
Australia still managed to pull of a win, despite their star pacer being injured. They managed to clinch the victory by a margin of 39 runs to register their first win of the tournament.
The game was not a walk in the park for Australia, though. Oman had its moment of brilliance and had Australia by the ropes at one point.
Being put to bat first, Australia was not quick off the blocks, as was expected of them. They lost quick wickets in Mitchell Marsh and Glenn Maxwell.
It was Marcus Stoinis and David Warner who got together to put on a 102-run stand that got them out of the muddle. Together, they took Australia to a respectable total of 164. Stoinis was instrumental with his inning of 67 from 36 balls.
Later, the bowlers did the job in the second inning. They kept their composure to get the job done. Stoinis once again emerged as the pick of the bowlers as he clinched three wickets in 3 overs and gave away just 19 runs.
