Another surprising incident occurred during the toss in IPL 2024. LSG’s vice-captain walked out on the field to take part in the toss despite KL Rahule being named in the playing 11 for the match against Punjab Kings.
Nicholas Pooran, who has previously captained the side, walked out for the toss, to everyone’s surprise. This left the fans and the anchor baffled.
KL Rahul was rested for workload management, says Pooran
When asked about the logic behind the same, Pooran said Rahul had suffered another injury. Before it could have sent a wave of shock around the ground, Pooran immediately added that the injury was not grave and that KL Rahul would partake in the game, albeit as a substitute.
“KL is coming back from injury, and we’re looking to give him a break in such a long tournament, but he’ll play as an impact sun,” Pooran confirmed at the toss.
KL Rahul, who missed the four tests of England’s tour of India earlier this year, has picked up a quadriceps injury. This injury saw him undergo rigorous rehabilitation at the NCA in Bengaluru before he was given a clean chit to play in the IPL 2024.
His comeback to the IPL was successful, as he smashed 58 off 44 in his team’s first game against Rajasthan Royals. Although his team ended on the losing side, his knock was the silver lining for his side. Besides that, Rahul also kept wickets in the first game despite having two other keepers in the team, de Kock and Pooran.
Pooran eventually won the toss, and KL Rahul appeared to bat in the match. He played an inning of 15 runs from 9 balls, including a six and four. Later, he was replaced by Naveen-ul-Haq, who came on as a substitute.
Lucknow posted a hefty total of 199, with fifty from de Kock and handy knocks from Pooran and Pandya. Despite a great start, they ended up winning the game with 21 runs as Punjab Kings’ batter faltered towards the end.
Lucknow Super Giants will look to continue their winning run heading into the tournament. They will face Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their next game on April 02nd.
