The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Jay Shah has announced that an advertisement for a new head coach of the Indian cricket team will be released soon, indicating the end of Rahul Dravid ‘s tenure.
Dravid has been serving as India’s head coach since November 2021, and his contract was extended after the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup. His current contract runs out in June 2024.
Dravid’s Future as Head Coach
Dravid’s extension as the head coach of the Indian team, along with his support staff, was granted in November 2023. However, the new contract is set to expire at the end of June this year, following India’s T20 World Cup campaign. Shah confirmed that while Dravid can apply for the head coach role again, there will be no automatic extension.

“Rahul’s tenure is only up to June. So if he wants to apply, he is free to do so,” Shah stated, emphasising that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will determine Dravid’s future role.
Shah revealed that the BCCI will soon release an advertisement for the head coach position, allowing a fair selection process for the role. When asked whether the new coach would be Indian or foreign, Shah explained that the CAC would make the decision.
“We cannot determine whether the new coach will be Indian or foreign. It will be up to the CAC, and we are a global body,” the BCCI official said.
There has been some debate on whether India should have different coaches for different formats, similar to what some international boards have done. However, Shah all but ruled out this possibility.
“That decision will also be made by the CAC. There are many all-format players, like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Rishabh Pant, among others. Moreover, there is no precedent for such a situation in India,” Shah said.
Shah also addressed the Impact Player rule, which has been criticised by active international stars, including India captain Rohit Sharma. While he acknowledged the concerns, Shah emphasised that the rule has provided opportunities for emerging Indian players.
As Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s head coach ends soon, the BCCI’s decision to initiate a new hiring process reflects the board’s focus on selecting the right candidate for the role.
