During the IPL 2024 match between Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants, a heated incident unfolded, leaving fans and commentators confused. It occurred in the fourth over of the match when Ishant Sharma bowled a wide delivery to Devdutt Padikkal, prompting an immediate signal from the umpire. Delhi Capitals’ skipper, Rishabh Pant, challenged the umpire’s decision by calling for a review, as indicated by the ‘T’ signal. However, a replay confirmed the initial call of a wide delivery. Despite this confirmation, Pant was visibly irked and engaged in a lengthy argument with the on-field umpire, halting the game for several minutes.
Commentators initially speculated about Pant’s intentions, with some suggesting he may not have wanted the review in the first place. The confusion deepened when former India captain Sunil Gavaskar proposed that Pant’s gesture may have been directed towards a fielder for advice on whether to take the review.
Rishabh Pant should get fined: Adam Gilchrist’s take on Rishabh Pant’s Umpire dispute
Adam Gilchrist, former Australian wicket-keeper batsman and IPL winner criticized Pant’s behaviour, calling for fines from IPL authorities. Gilchrist emphasized the need for umpires to assert control and swiftly resolve disputes to avoid disrupting the flow of the game. He highlighted the importance of maintaining efficiency and preventing unnecessary delays.
“I saw another example tonight where umpires need to take better control of games, and that is in any format. They just have to do a better job at moving things forward. There was a dispute over whether Rishabh had reviewed it.
“Okay, there was a miscommunication over the review call. But they stood there and spoke about that for 3-4 minutes. It’s a very simple conversation, I believe.
No matter how much Rishabh is complaining or any other player is complaining, umpires should just say, ‘It’s over’ and quickly move on. But if he keeps talking, he should get fined.” – Adam Gilchrist said via Cricbuzz.
Despite the controversy, Delhi Capitals secured their second victory in IPL 2024. They successfully chased down Lucknow Super Giants’ target of 168 runs, thanks to notable performances from Prithvi Shaw, debutant Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Rishabh Pant himself.
