Sarfaraz Khan’s long-cherished dream of donning the Indian Test cap materialized in Rajkot, making him the 311th Test player for India. The emotional moment unfolded as former captain Anil Kumble presented the cap, with Sarfaraz’s father, Naushad, tearfully witnessing the milestone.

The 26-year-old, who began cricket at six, expressed his joy at playing for India in front of his father, emphasizing the significance of the moment. Sarfaraz’s impactful Test debut included a rapid 62 despite a run-out following a mix-up with centurion Ravindra Jadeja.

Reflecting on the experience, Sarfaraz highlighted the importance of the emotional connection, stating, “It was my father’s dream to play for India… It was the proudest moment of my life.” His father’s presence, unexpected due to initial hesitations, added to the emotional intensity of the occasion.

Sarfaraz, known for his aggressive batting style, described the mix-up leading to his run-out as a “part of the game” and cited miscommunication as the cause. He credited Jadeja for providing crucial support during his innings, emphasizing the value of conversation while playing.

Sarfaraz opens up on debut jitters

Despite initial nervousness, Sarfaraz found himself in a familiar zone once he settled into his innings. Drawing a parallel between domestic and international cricket, he acknowledged the differences, particularly the absence of crowds and encounters with national players in first-class cricket.

“Initially, I was feeling awkward since it has been a long time in anticipation. But later on I felt that I had done all of this, once I was in my zone I did not find it difficult,” he said.

“Difference is there, you do not have crowds in first-class cricket and you do not come across national players much,” he added.

The day’s significance went beyond runs and performances for Sarfaraz, who expressed contentment at fulfilling his father’s dream. The emotional resonance of the occasion, coupled with the supportive presence of his father and wife, made it a memorable Test debut for Sarfaraz Khan.
