After a fabulous outing in the IPL 2024, Shreyas Iyer is returning to the Indian Cricket team. According to reports, the player is all set to feature in the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.
The reports further claim that the player could also play in the series against Zimbabwe in July 2024. Gautam Gambhir’s first assignments as head coach of the Indian team will probably be these two series.
His return to the squad can also result in a reunion between him and Gambhir, who was KKR’s mentor during IPL 2024 when Iyer won his first trophy as captain.
Shreyas Iyer to return to Indian setup
According to a statement made to TOI by a BCCI source, “Shreyas is currently not at NCA. Here, mostly those players are those who have performed in the IPL and will be in contention for Zimbabwe selection. Abhishek Sharma, Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav, Harshit Rana, Nitish Reddy, Vijaykumar Vyshak, and Yash Dayal are all at the camp. Some will go to Zimbabwe T20Is.”
Shreyas Iyer has been in the news recently for his removal from the central contract. There were several questions regarding his future with the Indian cricket team. Someone who was once dubbed the future captain of the national team has fallen from grace.
However, his recent performance in the IPL might be instrumental in his resurgence. His victory in IPL 2024 has enabled him to be considered for the Indian team. What remains to be seen is whether he will be able to make a name for himself and retain the spot.
