Oman and Namibia played out a thrilling T20 World Cup 2024 tie in their Group B match in Barbados on Monday. The match marked the first Super Over in the tournament in 12 years. Namibia triumphed in the match’s dramatic conclusion, thanks to the heroics of David Wiese.

Batting first on a challenging surface, Oman struggled to 109 in 19.4 overs. The trouble began immediately, with left-arm pacer Ruben Trumpelmann trapping opener Kashyap and skipper Aqib Ilyas off the first two deliveries of the match.

Trumpelmann struck again in his second over, dismissing wicketkeeper Naseem Khushi. Veteran all-rounder David Wiese then dismantled Oman’s middle order, taking three crucial wickets. Trumpelmann returned to finish with his best bowling figures, 4/21 in four overs, ensuring Oman’s low total.

Namibia’s chase seemed steady initially, but Oman tightened the game towards the end. Despite needing just five runs in the final over, medium pacer Mehran Khan performed brilliantly under pressure, taking two wickets and enforcing the tie. Khan bowled out Jan Frylinck for 46 and Zane Green, leaving Wiese to get two runs off the final delivery. Though Wiese missed the ball, wicketkeeper Khushi’s fumble allowed a crucial bye, levelling the scores and setting up the Super Over.

Wiese’s Super Over Heroics in T20 World Cup 2024

In the Super Over, Namibia’s skipper Gerhard Erasmus and David Wiese put on a batting clinic, plundering 21 runs off seamer Bilal Khan. Wiese’s powerful hitting and Erasmus’s clever placement left Oman with a steep target to chase.

When it was Oman’s turn, Wiese showcased his all-round prowess by taking the ball himself. He bowled a tight over, dismissing Naseem Khushi on his third delivery and conceding only ten runs, sealing a memorable win for Namibia. The 21 runs scored by Namibia in the Super Over set a new record for the highest Super Over score in T20 World Cup history.

This tie was only the fourth in T20 World Cup history and marked the third instance of a Super Over being used to decide the winner. The first tie, between India and Pakistan in 2007, was decided by a bowl-out. The first Super Over occurred in 2012 when Sri Lanka edged out New Zealand in Kandy. New Zealand lost another Super Over to the West Indies in the same tournament edition.
