In a heartwarming scene at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, the legendary West Indies cricketer Viv Richards shared a memorable moment with Indian cricket stars Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant after India’s commanding 50-run victory over Bangladesh in the Super Eight stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup. The win brought India closer to the semifinals, and Richards’ visit to the Indian dressing room added a special touch to the celebration.
India’s triumph at a venue named after one of cricket’s greatest icons was fittingly complemented by Richards’ presence. The legendary batter congratulated the Indian team for their outstanding performance in the tournament. Following the game, Richards met with Kohli and Pant, marking a wholesome moment that underscored the respect and camaraderie in the cricketing world.
During the brief medal ceremony, Dilip Vengsarkar handed over the fielding medal to Richards, who then presented it to Suryakumar Yadav. Yadav was honoured for his exceptional diving effort that led to the dismissal of Litton Das in the fifth over of Bangladesh’s chase. This gesture highlighted the mutual admiration between cricket legends and current players.
Richards, known for his powerful batting and charismatic personality, seemed almost at a loss for words when asked to speak about the Indian team’s World Cup performance. He expressed his admiration and mentioned his support for the team if the West Indies failed to secure the tournament.
“What can I say to a team that is already so powerful? You have a good thing going here. I can only say that if the guys in Maroon don’t get it done, I’ll be backing the Rohit Sharma-led side. Is that okay? That sounds reasonable enough as a Caribbean person,” Richards said, bringing laughter and cheers from the Indian players.
Praising Rishabh Pant
Richards also highly praised Rishabh Pant, affectionately nicknamed him the “Pocket Rocket.” He acknowledged Pant’s resilience and his remarkable return to the Indian team.
“Really good to see what you guys have here. Pant, it’s great to see you bat, man, considering what you must have been through. We could have missed that great talent, and that’s exactly what you have to offer in the future. Just great to see you guys and the way you’re playing your cricket, love it, enjoying it. Well done again!” Richards concluded.
With their spirits high, the Indian team is set to face Australia in their final Super Eight match on Monday, aiming to secure their place in the World Cup semifinals.
