The Impact Player rule in IPL is making rounds, but it’s only been introduced for the second season. BCCI secretary Jay Shah believes the rule can be reviewed for the upcoming season.
Shah, in a significant development, has confirmed that the rule was introduced on a trial basis. This means that if the players, franchisees, and stakeholders are all in favour, the rule could potentially be reviewed and even reversed, leading to a significant shift in the game’s dynamics.
The IPL 2024 has seen some of the most mammoth totals being scored and even chased. Teams often exceeded the total of 250-run barriers with ease. The blame for this sudden mounting of runs has fallen on the Impact Player rule.
Players and coaches alike believe the rule has allowed teams to bat an extra batter, which has allowed them to score massive runs more frequently.
Jay Shah Opens up about Impact Player rule
Talking about the rule, Jay Shah said, “Impact player rule was brought in as a test case. On the bright side, it is providing additional playing opportunities to two Indian players.” He added, “Isn’t it important that two Indian players are getting a chance? The game is also becoming more competitive.”
Jay Shah said "Impact player was used as a test in IPL, it was done so that two Indian players could get a chance. It’s not permanent, we will have a discussion with the Indian captain, players, franchises, coaches & then take a call on it. The meeting can happen once the World… pic.twitter.com/ybidFb5BMF
However, the jury is still out on whether the impact player rule has helped or depreciated the quality of competition in IPL.
There are arguments that it has not only made batting easy but also hampered the growth of all-rounders. Since a team can play an extra batter or bowlers according to its needs, the role of all-rounders might vanish over time.
Axar Patel made the same argument a few matches ago. He, along with many other all-rounders in the tournament, might feel the same dread. This is why Jay Shah has ensured that if the players feel it’s not alright, the board will discuss it. “After the World Cup, we will consult with players, franchises, and broadcasters and decide about the future course,” he assured.
