In the wake of Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly eyeing former pacer Zaheer Khan for the role of bowling coach. This development comes amid a comprehensive overhaul of the national team’s coaching staff, signalling a fresh approach as India prepares for several crucial tours and tournaments.
Gautam Gambhir’s influence on the coaching decisions is evident. Initially, reports suggested he was keen on appointing Vinay Kumar as the bowling coach, while Lakshmipathy Balaji was also considered a favourite. However, new reports indicate the BCCI’s preference for Zaheer Khan, a move that aligns with Gambhir’s vision for the team.
Zaheer Khan, instrumental in India’s 2011 ODI World Cup victory, shares a strong rapport with Gambhir. His impactful performance, especially in the final against Sri Lanka, is well-remembered, and his potential appointment as the bowling coach could bring a wealth of experience and strategic insight to the team. Currently serving as the Director of Cricket for Mumbai Indians, Zaheer’s transition to the national setup could be seamless, bringing valuable expertise as India faces challenging tours in Australia, England, New Zealand, and the upcoming ODI World Cup in South Africa.
Despite initial considerations, the BCCI seems disinterested in Vinay Kumar, who played 41 matches for India and claimed 49 wickets. Instead, the board is weighing the credentials of Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji for the bowling coach position.
“BCCI discussing the names of Zaheer Khan and Lakshmipathy Balaji for the position of bowling coach. BCCI is not interested in the name of Vinay Kumar,” a BCCI official stated, according to the Hindustan Times.
The BCCI’s strategic reshuffle extends beyond the bowling coach role. The current coaching staff under Rahul Dravid, including batting coach Vikram Rathour, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, and fielding coach T Dilip, are all on their way out. As the board looks to rejuvenate the team’s support structure, several notable names have emerged as potential candidates.
Abhishek Nayar, a prominent figure in Indian domestic cricket and mentor to several young stars, is reportedly the favourite for the batting coach position. His experience and proven track record in player development make him a strong contender. Additionally, WV Raman, who has extensive coaching experience and has also applied for the head coach position, remains a viable candidate.
Jonty Rhodes, the legendary South African fielder, is the leading candidate for the fielding coach role. However, a report from Cricbuzz suggests that T Dilip, the current fielding coach, might see his contract renewed. The final decision will hinge on the board’s assessment of the team’s needs and future goals.
